A charity rooted in community

LHOPS is a registered charity helping primary schoolchildren and families facing hardship in Sherborne and surrounding villages.

We work with local schools, supporters and businesses to provide practical help at Christmas and throughout the year.

Our story

The appeal began in 2020, when Sherborne Primary wanted to make sure struggling families did not miss out at Christmas. With David Birley and Ian Bartle leading the effort, and with generous backing from the local community, the project quickly grew.

As the need grew, the appeal expanded to support more schools and families. By 2024, it had grown beyond what a school PTA could manage, so LHOPS was set up as a dedicated charity.

Why LHOPS is needed

Sherborne includes one of the poorest wards in Dorset, and nearby villages face similar challenges. Many families need support throughout the year, with extra pressure at Christmas.

Financial hardship can affect a child’s wellbeing, confidence and school life. LHOPS provides practical support to help ease that pressure.

What we do

At Christmas, families identified by schools receive a hamper and a set of vouchers to spend in local independent shops.

During the school year, LHOPS also provides practical support that helps children feel included and more settled at school.

How support is delivered

We work closely with schools, who know their families well and can make sure support reaches the right people discreetly and fairly.

Looking ahead

LHOPS has grown because the need has grown, and because the local response has been so generous

We want to keep reaching more children with practical support, at Christmas and throughout the school year.

Last Christmas, 200 families received support that reminded them their community had not forgotten them. With your help, even more families can feel that support this year.
